AI-driven theme development means an AI coding assistant edits theme files on a development theme while a developer directs the work, reviews every change and decides what ships. On Shopify we use Claude Code with Shopify CLI and MCP connectors. It speeds up audits, repetitive template changes and catalog-scale content. It does not remove the need for someone who knows Liquid, performance and SEO.
What does each tool do?
- Claude Code is Anthropic’s AI coding tool. It reads and edits the files in a project and runs commands, with a developer directing and reviewing the work.
- Shopify CLI is Shopify’s command-line tool. For themes, it runs a development theme so changes can be previewed without touching the live store.
- MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard for connecting AI assistants to tools and data. With MCP connectors the assistant can read Shopify’s documentation and store data instead of guessing.
What does the workflow look like?
- Audit. Read the theme and the store, then write up SEO and performance findings as a phased plan with priorities.
- Build. Claude Code edits templates and sections on a development theme running through Shopify CLI.
- Review. A developer reads every diff, previews the development theme and checks it on real devices.
- Content. Collection copy, titles, meta descriptions and structured data are drafted and reviewed across the catalog.
- Release. A status report explains what changed and why. The client approves, and the work is promoted to production.
What is the AI good at?
- Reading a whole theme and finding templates that do the same job in different ways.
- Making the same change across many templates without missing one.
- Drafting structured data and checking it against the page.
- Drafting collection content from product data, for a person to edit.
- Turning findings into a written report.
Where does a person have to step in?
- Priorities. Deciding which problems are worth fixing first.
- Brand voice. Generated copy is a draft. Someone who knows the brand makes it sound right.
- Anything that touches revenue. Navigation, product pages and checkout paths get extra review.
- Performance trade-offs. A change that helps one metric can hurt another.
- Final QA and the decision to publish.

Why work on a development theme?
Nothing touches the live store until it has been reviewed and approved. The development theme is where the AI’s changes are previewed, tested and corrected. Promotion to production is a separate, deliberate step made by a person.
Where have we used it?
